ITC501 Reflection.

My top 3 favorite lectures.

Internet of things.

My favorite itc lecture is the internet of things, i really enjoyed iot lecture because it showed what could potentially be the future of technology and im really interested to see how it comes about. The thing that made it the best lecture in particular was because it really got my interest about creating networks where a lot of old technology is updated and given new purposes to be useful to the network.

What is real?

My second favorite lecture was the What is real lecture by Clare Atkins.

This was my second favorite blog because it involved augmented reality and virtual reality both are subjects im very excited for in the future. The videos Clare used to show us augmented reality really helped me get an idea of what it would really be like when the technology is perfected.

Internets own boy.

My 3rd favorite blog to do was the Internets own boy blog.

Before writing the blog i had no idea who Aaron Swartz was or what he did but once I watched the video about his life and what he achieved. The reason i enjoyed writing this blog so much was because i really enjoyed how the documentary showed his story line from where he started to how it all ended.

I think that anybody that enjoys using the internet today should definitely watch this documentary because without him the internet would not be the same as it is today.

Conclusion.

In conclusion i learned a lot about a lot of different things i didn’t think i would be learning about, but i enjoyed the challenge of actually writing down my opinion for somebody else to read.

What is Internet of things?

Internet of things devices are devices that are interconnected with other Internet of things devices to create a network, they collect data with sensors and are able to output information to either the user or to another device.

An example would be that the fridges sensors tell it that you have run out of milk, the fridge then sends this information to your phone while you are gone to let you know to buy more milk before you come home.

Characteristics.

Internet of things devices are just normal things you would find anywhere but have sensors added to them which gather information and relay that information to other devices or to the user.

Internet of things devices can be connected to the cloud but it isn’t a requirement, you can connect them to a home network to only share data between themselves or the data could be stored locally.

John Barret.

John Barret talks in this video about how in the future almost everything will be an internet of things device and connected to each other. Monitoring data output will also become a big thing once everything stores its information history or being able to ask google where things are and have it tell you instantly because its got a sensor that keeps its location.

Conclusion.

In conclusion having everything connected is going to make life a lot easier, but everything being connected will come with its own set of new challenges and its how we over come them that’s the real problem.

Ethics.

My ethical choice

When i was in Wellington last month i found a visa pay wave card on the ground, because there wasn’t a police station nearby i could hand it into i folded the card in half so it couldn’t be used and threw it in the bin so nobody could take it and potentially steal from the owner. I threw the card away because i believed it to be the right thing to do since i couldn’t find anybody to hand it in to.

My story relates to tenet 2.

Integrity – Members shall act in the execution of their profession with integrity, dignity and honor to merit the trust of the community and the profession, and apply honesty, skill, judgement and initiative to contribute positively to the well-being of society.

3 Important tenets.

the 3 most important tenets in my opinion are,

Integrity – Because being honest and trustworthy leads to more clear lines of communication and makes the job easier.

Good faith – Treating everyone equally and having consideration for their culture and beliefs means nobody is discriminated against and everyone is better off for it.

Informed consent – Working hard to make sure that other people are aware of the legal consequences of which can arise is better then taking a back seat and letting them get themselves and others into trouble.

NMIT and IIPT.

NMITs IT  bachelor and diploma courses are endorsed by IITP, IITP is a recognised certification all over the world meaning that when you get your diploma or bachelor you can work all over the world.

Internationalisation.

This weeks lecture on internationalisation was about international businesses having easily usable ways of changing languages and how it can affect the type and amount of people visiting the website and how many will stay. trying to get your website compatible with as many people in the target country requires you understand how many languages are spoken by a large percentage of the country. To maximize compatibility with as many language groups as possible requires you to make sure that changing language settings is easily accessible in multiple languages, because having language change settings in only English wont allow anyone who actually wants to change the language to be able to understand thus creating a massive problem.

Which types of businesses would benefit the most from internationalisation?

Pretty much any company that is planning to go global would benefit from internationalisation

That being said large companies that sell to a lot of different countries all around the world will benefit the most from internationalisation because there will be a lot of traffic coming through their website and having as many language and currency options as possible increases peoples likely hood to stay on the site and buy something.

Also smaller businesses in countries with multiple languages like Canada or Britain will keep their business available to everyone.

Which (kind of) countries would most benefit from internationalisation?

I think countries that have large populous  like China or India would benefit the most from internationalisation because of the large amount of people they both have in their countries (Both currently have 1.3 billion people) China also has a lot of languages with Mandarin being the most spoken  and Hindi the most spoken in India.

Conclusion.

In conclusion internationalisation is about making your business/website accessible to as many people as possible and if you want to make it on the global stage then having the best possible internationalisation for your business or website is crucial to your success.

Copy left.

Do you think that copying is always theft or not – explain your reasons?

Debating whether copying content that you didn’t create is stealing is a question which  isn’t easy to answer. Taking something from someone and using it for whatever reason you want is stealing but copying the same thing and using it for whatever you want, is that still stealing? you technically didn’t take anything off them you just made a copy for yourself. In my opinion copying somebody Else’s content isn’t stealing as long as you don’t try to make a profit, so long as you keep what ever you copied to yourself and not try to sell it on as your own it shouldn’t be considered as stealing.

Who is Larry Lessig and what part has he played in the copyright/copyleft debate?

Larry Lessig is an American attorney and political activist , he also founded Copyleft.

Copy left allow people to freely use, share and modify other peoples work as long as the same is allowed to other people further down the line.

Larry wants everybody to be able to share their work with everyone and be able to customize or modify it freely without having to worry about being sued for breach of copyright.

Copyright.

Digital copyright problems.

I think one of the biggest problems with digital copyright today is the way it stunts innovation , having all of these ideas under copyright making them unusable only to the creator or if you pay for it is making innovation for new ideas a lot harder than it really should be. I also think that a lot of people don’t even know they are breaching copyright when they post things on their blog or in a you tube video.

My solution.

My solution to this is that there should be taught to people in school as something they shouldn’t try to break because it just the same as stealing something physical from someone. I also think that if something is being innovated on for something that could potentially solve a lot of problems they should be able use the content with no fear of getting punished as long as they have proven that they aren’t stealing it or using it for their own profits.

For my solution to work.

For my solution to work i think that the copyright laws need to changed or updated reasonably so that people or companies who are trying to solve world problems cant get in trouble for using someone Else’s work, the companies or people would have to a certification that they aren’t going to use it for personal profits but are just trying to help fix the problem whatever that may be. I also think that the new laws should be  easily available to everyone so that it is very clear that using something without the original creators permission is stealing or that you need a permit to use them.

My opinion.

I think its a good thing that there are measures being enforced to protect peoples property, the problem with this law is that you are guilty until proven innocent which is somehow still being allowed. The people pursuing the copyright claim should have to prove that the person is guilty whereas what happens now is they just hand you the notice and that’s it. Piracy is always going to exist so i think that the people who enforce the laws need to be sure that they person that they think has stolen something actually has because otherwise its just unfair and goes against innocent until proven guilty.

Problem solving.

My personal bias.

One of my personal biases would be that i am often overly optimistic about a situation, i tend to think that no matter what I’m doing its going to turn out fine thus leading me to not try as hard as i probably should in some situations because in the end i think its going to work out. This bias also does not couple well with procrastination because if I’m procrastinating about a task i have to do i will think “oh well i can do it later and it will probably be good enough anyway” this leads me to sometimes leave things way too late and i end up getting stressed and panicking about it. Although I’m not as bad as i used to be I’m still working on it and hope to break out of it one day.

Detail or Big picture?

I believe that i am a Big picture oriented person because I’m always thinking about the end result of things. I take the information and think about how its going to look in the long run of things without thinking about all the work that comes in between. This mind set that i have does not help me at all when i NEED to go into details about things, i simply hate it and dread doing it.

How Did the Above Interfere with My Problem Solving?

Many times my personal bias of being overly optimistic has led me to not go into the specific details when trying to figure something out and skip all the small details, i end up having to go back to the start and checking all the details making sure everything really is in order. if i could just pay attention to the details from the start i wouldn’t have this problem much.

What is real?

What is real?

To be honest I’m not sure what is really “real” but i think that its fair to say that everything you experience and will experience in the future was and will be real, whether it be something that happens in a virtual world or something that happens in your head. I think its fair to count all of that as something “real” that happened.

What do you think might be two positive and two negative aspects of the Hololens if it was to be widely used ?

I think that Microsoft Hololens will be the next big thing, some positives it can bring  is being able to do whatever you would do on a computer or phone but without having to look at a screen and you can also take it wherever you want to go and use it to easily find information on anything you can see.

The negatives, although i think that this could one of the most amazing inventions for a long time i can think of a few downsides that would need to be ironed out before its the best product it can be. For example if someone where driving while also using the Hololens it could potentially be the cause of many accidents ( we see this in cellphones while driving but its a lot more obvious to police than a pair of glasses) , the second downside is that at the moment the glasses are rather large but I’m sure they will be able to make them smaller in the future. Just a third point i wanted to add is that if someone is using the glasses and wants to show people who don’t have the Hololens what they are doing they are unable.

Do you think the oculus rift will have a life outside of games?

I think that the oculus rift will be mostly use for games as it creates a way more immersive scenario for people playing the game but i could see it being also used for people who are learning new skills E.G Driving, flying or skiing  other than that i think it would be best kept to video games.

Video.

I chose this game play using the Occulus rift because it shows how more realistic video games can get when using the Occulus rift, although i personally wouldn’t want to play horror games using it i could see the appeal for it. I think that the Occulus rift will create a whole new way of making and playing video games creating a more immersive experience.

Q1:  What did he do that got him into trouble?

Aaron Swartz got into trouble because he was caught downloading large amounts of documents from JSTOR from the MIT network.

Q2:  What were the possible motives mentioned in the film for his so called “crime”?

The 2 main motives mentioned were that he was downloading all the documents so he could create a store to compete with JSTOR and sell them, or that he was downloading them so he could analyse the large amount of documents for research purposes which he had done in the past for another website.

Q3:  What does each motive imply from a MORAL and LEGAL point of view?

If he has downloaded the documents to create competition for JSTOR to profit from then it would be viewed as illegal and immoral but if he was downloading them to analyse and research then what he was doing was what he believed to be the moral thing to do.

Q4:  Why were understanding his motives so important ?

A lot of people who knew Aaron knew that he wouldn’t try make a profit from what he was doing, the government didn’t know his motives and wanted to make an example of him to others when in reality all he was doing was trying to make the world a better place.  If the government had understood what he was trying to do he probably wouldn’t have been charged so harshly.

Q4.1: How many charges did this end up giving him?

Aaron ended up with 4 felony charges which included wire fraud, computer fraud, unlawfully obtaining information and damaging a protected computer.

Q5: What was wrong with the sopa bill ?

The sopa (stop online piracy act) bill intended to give U.S law enforcement a way to combat online piracy better. If the bill had been passed it would mean copyright owners had the power to take down websites and fie law suits for breaching copyright. The thing wrong with this is that it could take down an entire website just for one breach on one of its pages.

Q6: Why did It look like the bill would be impossible to stop from passing?

The sopa bill looked impossible to stop because it had so much support from the beginning, the people being in support had a lot of money and they were going up against the common people who only had their voices.

Q7:  What were some of the significant factors that helped raise awareness for dismissing the sopa bill?

The factors that raised awareness to fight against the bill was petitions, GoDaddys decision to support it backfiring on them and support from influential websites and people such as Wikipedia, Reddit and President Barack Obama.

Q7.1  Whats the important message about this victory to those of us in the “new world”

The message that came from this victory was that we shouldn’t just sit idly by and let the government do what ever they want and if they try anything like this again in the future we should do everything we can to oppose it.

Q8:  “Bringing public access to the public domain”  “books are our cultural legacy”.  What are these statements have to do with his passion … (37:25)

Aaron believed that if the public has access to a public domain they have a right to not have to pay for access because there are people who cannot afford the hundreds of dollars that’s being charged to have access to something that he believed should have free public access.

Q9:  What does q8 have to do with Jack Andraka.

Shortly after Aaron died Jack Andraka made a discovery involving Pancreatic cancer which had a high mortality rate because it was so hard to discover early enough to do anything, he made this discover by using the documents that Aaron was trying to download. If more discoveries could be made like this through the use of public domains then surely they should be free access to everyone.

Q10:  Whats the most important question on this list. Why?

I think Q9 is the most important on this list. I think this because what Jack Andraka did at such a young age as well is proof that if everyone had access to free public domains then these sort of discoveries could be made a lot more frequently.

Innovation Blog.

Cloud storage.

The innovative new idea I’m going to talk about is Cloud storage, although cloud storage is available now i think its going to get even bigger and more popular than it is now.

Being able to access your files wherever you go is an amazing idea, it is also very useful for businesses as they can use cloud storage instead of some servers which saves on power but also protects against losing data if something were something to happen to the building the servers were located, cloud storage usually has a few backup servers in different locations on the earth to prevent loss of data.

History

1950s, time sharing was invented because buying and maintaining mainframes was too expensive.

1969, J.C.R Licklider invented the ARPANET ( Advanced research projects agency network) his idea was for everybody in the world to be connect to each other and be able to access data from anywhere.

1970s, IBM released an operating system called VM it allowed people to have multiple virtual machines on a single physical node.It took the idea of time sharing to the next level.

2002, Amazon created AWS (Amazon Web Services). AWS was an advanced system of cloud services

2009, Google brought low-cost computing and storage services, and Microsoft followed suit with a cloud service of their own called Microsoft Azure.

http://www.slideshare.net/Oneserve/a-brief-history-of-cloud-computing-33889054 3/31/2016

The idea of cloud storage first started in 1969 when J.C.R. Licklider came up with the idea, his vision was for everyone to be interconnected to be able to access data and programs from any where.Cloud storage has been developed but has only recently with more bandwidth being available become more popular.

This is why i think that it can only get bigger because more people will catch on that they can save their data to a cloud storage service, they then don’t have to worry about bringing physical copies with them or that it will get lost, also most people these days get data with their phone plan which allows them to access it more frequently.

Personal Bias.

I am personally towards being passionate about this because all of my family other than my Mum, Dad and sister live in another country, if i could show my grandparents how to access my storage where i would put photos, videos and letters to them so they could go and see what the next thing we’ve been doing easily.

Obstacles.

The main problem i can see people being worried about when choosing whether or not to use a cloud storage is the safety of their data, What if it gets hacked? what if they lose it somehow.

The companies offering selling their storage will have to guarantee that its safe to use and that if something somehow does fail that they will have multiple backups available.
